Now Operational

High Dependency
Unit (HDU)

A dedicated care environment for patients who need more than a general ward can provide — available now, and continuing to grow.

Status: Operational (Development Ongoing) Serves: Mild Near-Miss & High-Dependency Cases

Unit is Operational — The HDU is currently receiving patients requiring high-dependency monitoring and care. Full development of the unit continues alongside its active clinical use.

Overview

Between the Ward and Intensive Care

Not every critically unwell patient needs a full Intensive Care Unit. But there is a significant category of patients — those with deteriorating vital signs, post-operative cases requiring close watch, or patients managing serious acute conditions — who need far more than a general ward can safely offer. The HDU exists precisely for them.

St. Paul's Mission Hospital's High Dependency Unit provides a dedicated clinical space with enhanced monitoring, closer nurse-to-patient ratios, and the equipment necessary to detect and respond to changes in a patient's condition before they escalate. The unit is currently functional and receiving patients, while its full development continues in parallel.

This unit emerged as one of the key must-requirements on SPMH's journey toward Level 4 accreditation — and its establishment reflects the hospital's commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable patients receive the level of attention their condition demands.

Who the HDU Is Designed to Serve

  • Mothers with serious obstetric complications requiring close post-delivery monitoring
  • Post-operative patients in the critical recovery period following surgery
  • Patients with deteriorating vital signs who are at risk of further decline
  • Patients recovering from acute medical events such as severe infections, respiratory distress, or haemorrhage
  • Mild near-miss cases where continuous observation is essential to a safe outcome
Impact on Patients

What the HDU Means for Those We Care For

Fewer Emergency Transfers

Patients who previously needed urgent referral to higher-level facilities can now be safely managed right here, saving families the cost, time, and distress of long-distance transfers.

Earlier Detection, Faster Response

Continuous monitoring means that changes in a patient's condition are caught sooner, allowing the clinical team to intervene before a situation becomes a crisis.

A Safer Recovery Environment

Post-operative and post-procedure patients receive structured, closely monitored recovery in a space designed for their level of need — improving outcomes in the critical hours after intervention.

Care Close to Home

For families in Homa Bay and surrounding areas, having an HDU locally means loved ones can be cared for without the burden of travelling far from their support network.

Confidence for Families

Knowing a loved one is in a dedicated, monitored unit — not a general ward — brings a measure of reassurance that is itself part of the healing environment.

Stronger Clinical Outcomes

The structured environment of an HDU directly correlates with better patient outcomes — fewer complications, shorter recovery times, and safer discharges.
